WCHC offers a full spectrum of cardiovascular services from prevention to diagnostic testing and treatment.
Prevention - Cardiac Risk Assessment
The WCHC Cardiology Clinic specializes in the early detection and treatment of cardiac problems focusing on the identification of risk factors. Using state-of-the-art technology, patients are provided with a comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment and an individualized plan to improve heart health.
Diagnostic Technology
When red flags show up in a physical exam or the cardiac risk assessment, our Cardiology Clinic offers a wide range of diagnostic technology to best assess your situation.
- Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG): measures the speed, rhythm and evenness of heartbeat
- Holter Monitor: measures and records heart activity continuously for 24-48 hours
- Echocardiogram: uses ultrasound (sound waves) to produce an image of your heart
- Chest X-ray: creates an image of your heart and chest area
- Exercise Stress Test: shows the heart's performance under exertion
- Stress Echo Test: combines exertion with ultrasound imaging to determine heart's performance
- Chemical Stress Test: evaluate heart function and coronary blood flow

WCHC's Diabetes Education program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and certified by the State of Iowa for meeting the national standards for diabetes self-management education. We are committed to informing our communities how to prevent and control all types of diabetes. Our programs are developed to provide patients with diabetes the skills needed to achieve the best quality of life. Our Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist offers a variety of services for patients with Type I, Type II, Gestational Diabetes, and Prediabetes including:

Individualized Diabetes Education
Our Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist will meet with patients one-on-one to conduct an assessment to determine patient's specific needs. During this session, our Diabetes Nurse Educator will train you on self-managing your chronic disease and how to live a healthier life. Instructional topics may also include: general diabetes overview, blood sugar monitoring, understanding and preventing complications, diabetic emergencies, healthy eating/meal planning, exercise, medications, goal setting, and stress management.
Group Diabetes Classes
Group classes provide participants with the skills and support needed to improve their quality of life with Diabetes. Classes are taught by a multi-disciplinary team including: Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist, Dietitians, Pharmacists, and Social Workers. Topics during these sessions include: goal setting, preventing complications, medications, meal planning, exercise, glucose monitoring, and stress management.

Annual Follow-Up Class
Individuals who have participated in previous diabetes education are invited to an annual follow-up class to review skills and techniques to best manage your condition. Participants will review medications, meal planning, tips for dining out, preventing complications, and the ADA's recommendations for standards of diabetes care.

Emergency Care
If you need immediate medical attention, call 9-1-1.

WCHC's emergency department is a Level IV Trauma Care Center with medical professionals ready to provide patients with skillful care at a moment's notice. Our facility is equipped to stabilize a patient's immediate needs and has access to specialized services and air care to a tertiary hospital when needed.

Outpatient Treatment and Infusion Center
WCHC offers many of the same infusions and procedures as the Iowa City hospitals right here at home. With flexible hours, we work with you to fit your busy work or home schedule and keep you healthy. Our nursing staff is
compassionate, respectful and strives to provide the best quality experience possible. All patients are overseen by our prominent WCHC Hospitalist staff. They monitor and assess Ambulatory patients to make sure we are giving the safest care possible.

Southeast Iowa! Located inside Entrance #9, WCHC has the only comprehensive rehabilitation facility in Washington County. Our five licensed physical therapists, two occupational therapists, and speech therapist are all committed to

Types of Primary Care
Family Practice
Primary medical care for people of all ages. Range of health services include preventive care, wellness exams, care for chronic conditions, routine gynecological care and pediatrics.

Internal Medicine
Like family medicine, internal medicine can be primary care; however, it is focused on adult health care. Our Internist has special training in dealing with complex, chronic illness and treating several different illnesses at the same time.
Cardiology
Cardiology is a branch of medicine that concerns diseases and disorders of the heart, which may range from congenital defects to acquired heart diseases such as coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. Our Cardiologist Dr. Stephan Schomer has 31 years of experience in field.
